Thomas and coworkers found that N di-isopropylethylenediamine was effective in the treatment of experimental tuberculous infections in mice in 1961. Among the many congeners of this compound, d-form of ethylenediimino-di-l-butanol dihydrochloride proved to be most tuberculostatic agent. This compound was Ethambutol which has been introduced for the patient with advanced pulmonary tuberculosis in Korea since 1965.
Recently we have a chance to evaluate effects of the Ethambutol for the retreat patient with advanced pulmonary tuberculosis.
A prospective analysis of 39 patients with advanced pulmonary tuberculosis were made. Clinical symptoms or signs such as fever, chill and fatigue were much improved in 77% of the patients.
During the treatment, weight gain were observed in 26 patients among 39 patients.
Sputum negative conversion rate of AFB was 63% with 6 month¢¥s treatment of Ethambutol. Cavitary lesion of the 6 patients among the 13 cavitary patients were closed within 6 months. Mild side action noted in some patient: mild headache in 7 cases, dizziness in 4 cases, fever in 1 case and lowered visual acuity in 4 case. Those complications, however, were disappeared within 2 weeks after cesation of the Ethambutol.
